Snoopy made his Peanuts debut on October 4, 1950, just two days after Charles M. Schulz’s comic strip first appeared. In this earliest form, he was an unnamed, four-legged dog, inspired in part by Schulz’s childhood dog, Spike. The thought balloons, upright walk, and extraordinary imagination that would come to define Snoopy were still years away. As Schulz’s drawing style evolved, so did Snoopy, gradually becoming more expressive, independent, and imaginative. From these simple beginnings emerged the daydreamer who would become Joe Cool, the World War I Flying Ace, and one of the most enduring characters in comic-strip history
