On June 25, 1867, 3000 Chinese workers working on the coutry’s first transcontinental railroad staged the largest labor stoppage to that date; protesting unfair wages, dangerous working conditions, and long working hours compared to their white counterparts.
“Strike Hard”, made by artist Charlie Mai, commemorates this early Chinese labor history in America and juxtaposes it to the simultaneous import and fascination with Chinese goods. The willow pattern spike will hold the rails, but it has a breaking point.
